I have to laugh when I see people on TWoP posting with great confidence that in 1981 women didn't have long, straight hair (my mother did - her horrid eighties perm didn't come until a couple of years later) or that men wouldn't have taken their daughters to buy shoes (my father did sometimes, even though my mother was a housewife at the time).
